Carmel-by-the-Sea may adopt addresses and UCSC students advance to the finals in an AI contest.
Will Carmel-by-the-Sea get addresses?
The question came up last Tuesday at a city council meeting. The discussion that prompted it was about the independent mail delivery service provided by the city, “Peninsula Messenger Service”. The service is becoming too expensive and the city announced it will begin asking residents to pay $45 per month for the service, or show proof of a physical limitation in order to be exempt of the cost.
The lack of addresses has complicated many modern services, such as ride shares and delivery, and could become a problem when registering for RealIDs.
UCSC engineering students advance to the finals of the “Amazon Alexa Prize Socialbot Grand Challenge”.
The challenge is designed to further AI conversational technology, with the goal being to have a twenty minute conversation with an Alexa device about current events and popular topics. The students, named Team Athena, have competed four years in a row and were one of five teams worldwide to advance to the finals.
