This Week on the Central Coast...
A math center is opening at the Del Monte Center, an open casting call was announced in Santa Cruz, and a local Watsonville artist will be featured at Burning Man
Mathnasium coming to Del Monte Shopping Center
A new supplemental math center is opening at the Del Monte Shopping Center in Monterey. The company says it helps students grow their skills in math by providing personalized lesson plans to help them understand the why behind the concepts.
The director of the new center compared this method of learning math to going to the gym. If you want to build muscle or prepare for a physical challenge, you go to a gym regularly for a while and you will eventually see results. The Mathnasium works the same way by giving kids math exercises designed to help them grow their skills.
Membership to Mathnasium works similar to a gym membership, with the option of signing up for six months or twelve. Each membership allows the child to come to the center up to ten times per week. Memberships cost around $249 and are available for kids in grades two through twelve.
Open casting call for local surfers
Santa Cruz Surf Project announced an open casting call for local surfers between the ages of 14 and 22. The posting notes that no acting experience is needed and the film will be created by an Academy Award winning team.
“The casting call will be Saturday, Aug. 27 from 12-5 p.m. at Santa Cruz High School Auditorium 415 Walnut Ave., Santa Cruz, CA 95060.”

Watsonville artist’s sculpture will be featured at Burning Man
Pierre Rich is a metal sculptor from Watsonville who has attended and participated in Burning Man regularly since 2006. The festival offers the unique ability to display large pieces, which might otherwise be difficult to show. It also attracts a variety of people from many different backgrounds and walks of life.
His horse sculpture, titled Golden Possibilities, will be a part of a larger exhibit, called Wild Horses of the American West. “There are not enough resources to help wild horses right now. They are undervalued and overpopulated. We hope this project will make a statement about what’s happening.”
Rich was able to create the piece thanks to a grant from the Coalition for Healthy Nevada Lands. You can visit Rich’s website to learn more about him and his work.
