Monterey approves COVID memorials, a new Cabrillo Gallery exhibition opens, and NPS flies weather balloons
Monterey County is honoring victims of COVID in March
Monterey County passed a resolution to recognize the first Monday of March as a Memorial Day for the victims and survivors of COVID-19. White flags will decorate the outside of the county building in honor of the 700 victims of the pandemic.
Cabrillo Gallery opened its first in-person exhibition of 2022
The gallery will feature 38 works that range from traditional paintings and photography to mixed media projects. Each work of art depicts the artist’s idea of the theme: “Who We Are: Portraying Identity”. Gallery Director Beverly Rayner believes the wide range of media reflects how wide ranging the idea of the theme can be. “Identity is so complex. There are so many ways you shape, or recognize your identity in the world.”
The exhibit will run through April 8, open Monday through Friday from 9am to 4pm and Monday and Tuesday evenings from 7pm to 9pm. Admission is free. Additionally, a Virtual Jurors Talk with Pauli Ochi will be on March 12 at 4pm.
NPS scientists are studying clouds to better predict the weather
The Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey and San Jose State University have been studying clouds after rainfall with the use of a weather balloon. The time just after rain is perfect, since there are more clouds built up in the sky.
The balloon collects temperature, humidity, and wind speed data and sends the information back down to researchers.
In addition to the balloons, researchers also use aircraft, which can collect data from varying altitudes and locations. “It can also gather data on pollution, dust, and aerosol particles in the atmosphere.”
The ultimate goal of the research is to use cloud formations to predict a more accurate forecast.
