This Week on the Central Coast…
Folktale Winery, Filipino pop-up, Modest Mouse, an art festival, and cruising tries to make a comeback in Salinas.
Monterey
Folktale Winery coming to Carmel-by-the-Sea
A new tasting room will be opening at Seventh and Dolores, called The Wine Room @ 7D. Folktale and Seventh and Dolores share the same owners and are ready to bring a new experience to downtown. The owners are hoping to open by May 11. Once open, the tasting room will be open from 12pm to 6pm.
Interested in differentiating themselves from other tasting rooms, The Wine Room wants the focus to be on educating people about the local wine region, rather than just a place to hang out and drink. Tastings will initially only feature folktale wines, but the owners plan on bringing in other local wineries as well.
The Guided Signature Flight features six two-ounce pours for $50, while a choose-your-own flight will be $60. The owners plan on serving small bites in addition to the wines, such as oysters, cheese boards, and desserts.
“Folktale Wine Club members will be able to enjoy their benefits at this new Wine Bar as well, and we will be adding benefits for our Wine Club membership that will apply at the Seventh & Dolores restaurant, adding a Wine Club Happy Hour there on Sundays and Mondays.”
Santa Cruz
Filipino pop-up enters the scene in Santa Cruz
Paul “Alex” Suniga spent years working in restaurants, perfecting his craft. Then, in 2021, he decided to start out on his own. Pare, his Filipino fine-dining concept, will take residency every Sunday through June at 11th Hour Coffee and After Hours in downtown Santa Cruz.
Suniga plans to have a seasonal menu, adjusting with whatever is available at the local farmers markets. However, there are a few staples that will stay on the menu, such as adobo and ube pandesal (cheese-filled bread made with purple yams). In addition to the weekly dinners, he has a few other events planned, including a pop-up at Other Brother Beer Company in Seaside (details are still being worked out).

Modest Mouse performing in Santa Cruz
Indie rock band Modest Mouse, known for their song Float On, will be coming to the Santa Cruz Civic Auditorium on May 4. The show starts at 8pm and tickets are available on Ticketmaster. (Although the article said the tickets were $55, I could only find general admission tickets for $135 on Ticketmaster.)
Tannery Arts Spring Center market
The artists’ market is coming back for Mother’s Day weekend, Saturday, May 13, from 10am to 5pm. The market will feature more than forty artisan sellers, offering “handmade ceramics, unique jewelry, paintings and prints, candles, self-care products, one-of-a-kind clothing, and much more.”
Live music will be accompanied by local beer and wine and several choices of food. There will be activities for all ages, including glass blowing demos and art bingo. “With something for everyone, it’s the perfect way to spend Mother’s Day weekend with family and friends.”
Salinas
Salinas considers lifting the ban on cruising
Cruising was banned 30 years ago not only due to the traffic congestion and littering it contributed to, but also due to alcohol consumption and crime. Last Tuesday, at the town hall meeting, Councilmember Orlando Osornio brought up the topic on behalf of local car clubs.
If the council approves, there will be a 3-month trial period, possibly starting before summer. Before making that decision, the city wanted to hear pros and cons from the community.
A member of the Castroville Midnighters car club said “It's just nothing but community and family. It’s nothing but the show of cars, the love of cars, and just showing your art”.
